Joseph Gales was born in 1761 in Eckington, Derbyshire, the son of Thomas and Sarah Gales and grandson of Timothy Gales. Joseph Gales, printer, bookseller, auctioneer, and editor of the Sheffield Register, fled Sheffield in 1794. He went to to Hamburg, before emigrating to Philadelphia in 1795. He was employed by the American Daily Advertiser. In 1798, members of the North Carolina delegation offered him the State printing contract. He moved to Raleigh, North Carolina and established the Raleigh Register. The Gales had been Unitarians since their days in Sheffield. Read More ».
