Bailey
John BAILEY, was born in 1618 Sheffield, Yorkshire. He sailed on the ship Bevis from Southampton in 1638, he was listed as a "servant" but wasn't attached to a "planter." He married 1655 to Lydia Backus, who was also from Sheffield. In his Will he left half his land to eldest son, John the other half to be shared equally between his other sons, Benjamin and Nathaniel. They also had 3 daughters, Lydia, Susanna and Mary. John Bailey, Sr. was one of the founders of Haddam, CT. He was a viewers of chimneys and ladders in 1648, he was a constable in 1656/7 and became a freeman in 1657.Beckwith
Matthew Beckwith, born 1610 Pontefract, Yorkshire; died 1680 New London, CT. Matthew seemed to be always in trouble. In 1639 Matthew was fined 10s. for 'immoderate drinking' - he was fined 50s. for 'evil slaundering' against Matthew Marven.1651 - Beckwith was ordered to court to pay his creditors.
1660 - ordered to pay 24 pounds for damages to Richard Hailey.
1680 - "Matthew Beckwith at aged about 70, missing his way in a very dark night, fell from a ledge of rocks about 20 to 30 feet high and beat out his brains against a stone he fell upon."
1682 - Inventory taken - 294pounds. he had married twice.
Belding
Richard Belding (1591-1655), son Sir Francis & Margaret, born in Kippax, Yorkshire. Married 1622 Margaret Ackronde at Heptonstall, Yorkshire. Children:- William(1622-1655) born in Kippax, died Hartford, CT
- Samuel(1624-1712) born Kippax. died MA - served as town cowkeeper, became a freeman in 1657. His wife was killed by Indians in 1677. He married 3 more times.
- John (1630-1677) born in Kippax, died CT married Lydia Standish. They had 3 children. He was made a freeman in 1657. He was a trooper in King Philip's War. He was a large landowner and a merchant. He died at the age of 46. He left an estate of 912 pounds
Eggleston
Bygod Eggleston (1586-1674), Born Setterington, Yorkshire; died at Windsor, Connecticutt. After his mother had died, Bygod and two of his sister's were sent to live with their paternal Uncle in Norwich. It was there that he married for the first time. His wife died in childbirth, so Bygod, with his 4 young children set out to the New World. They were part of the company that sailed with Rev. John Warham on the 'Mary & John' in 1630, which was part of the 7-ship Winthrop fleet. They settled on land called Mattapan and established a community called Dorchester, the home town of many of the settlers. They later changed the name to Windsor. Bygod Eggleston is listed as one of the founders of Windsor, Connecticut which is 6 miles north of Hartford, Connecticut. Bygod married again to Mary ? and they had 7 children. He was 67 years old when he fathered his youngest child, Benjamin.In his Will, Bygod left his house and land to Benjamin "he being ye staff of my age."
Eric M. Knight
Eric Knight the author of "Lassie Come Home", was born in Menston, later living in Leeds and Halifax. At age 15, he joined his mother in the United States. He joined the army and fought in several famous battles. He settled down in Connecticutt, where he became a syndicated film critic. He was invited to Hollywood by Sam Goldwyn. There he wrote 3 successful novels, which enabled him to buy a farm on the banks of the Hudson river. It was there that he wrote his most famous novel, 'Lassie Come Home'. In 1939 he began working in the office of Strategical Study, later be named the CIA. Here he made patriotic movies with Frank Capra. In 1942 Hollywood began filming the movie, "Lassie Come Home" but Eric never saw the completion of it because in 1943 he was killed in a plane crash in the jungles of Dutch Guyana (Suriname). When he had become an American citizen, he made this statement: "It matters not what it says on my passport. This above all, I am a Yorkshireman."Eric Knight is remembered with a blue plaque in Menston library, in the village where he was born.

Christian Joseph Northrop. Born Mirfield, Yorkshire in 1595; died Milford, Connecticut in 1669) married 1648 Mary Norton in Milford, Connecticut. They had at least 8 children and from these children came many publicly active citizens.Remington
John REMINGTON was born 1600 in Lockington, Yorkshire, son of Rev. Richard Remington, Archdeacon and Elizabeth HUTTON daughter of Matthew Hutton, Archbishop of York. Richard & Elizabeth had 8 children. Timothy was born in 1592 and John, the youngest was born 1600. When he arrived in the US he befriended the Puritans according to records.The Remingtons moved to Suffield, Hartford, and lived there for several generations then Eliphalt moved to Ilion, New York.
