Sir Martin Frobisher

Sir Martin Frobisher (1535-1594) is believed to have been born at Altoft, Normanton near Wakefield, Yorkshire.

He was sent to live with his Uncle Yorke in London, who sent him to Africa on his first voyage in 1553. He went on many voyagers after that and was even accused of piracy though the cases never went to trial. He became determined to find the Northwest Passage as a trade route to India and China. He made three voyagers which all landed in north eastern Canada. Frobisher Bay is named after him. He was knighted for his role in defeating the Spanish Armada in 1588 by Elizabeth I.

He was killed while leading an assault on a Spanish fortress in Brittany.
